Three remanded over drug trafficking

Three accused persons, a trader Bright Ayivor aged 37, Ijiuba Ifeanyi Anicetu, aged 52, a technician, and Kwabena Botwe aged 58, a businessman have been remanded by the Accra Circuit Court over an alleged possession and trafficking of narcotic substances suspected to be cocaine.

They have been charged with conspiracy, possession, and trafficking of narcotics without lawful authority.

According to prosecution, the accused persons were arrested after receiving an intelligence on suspected drug trafficking activities in Accra.

Their pleas were rejected by the court as the substances had been forwarded to the police forensic laboratory for examination.

Meanwhile, an alleged accomplice Togbe Akwasi Atsyovi is at large.

Prosecution indicated that police received an intelligence that the accused persons had arranged to supply quantities of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine to a prospective buyer.

One of the accused Ifeanyi was later arrested with twelve slaps of the suspected substances and later confessed during interrogation that he was sent by someone based in Belgium to meet Ayivor and deliver the the substance to the buyer.

The consignment was expected to be sold for one hundred and ninety three thousand, six hundred United States dollars ($193,600).

One of the suspects Ayivor, who was expected to receive the consignment was later arrested allegedly in possession of some additional quantities of the suspected narcotics.

Botwe who is alleged to be the supplier was also arrested and a search in his house revealed four hundred thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢400,00) suspected to be proceeds from the illicit trade.

The court declined a bail application by counsel for the accused stating that investigations must be completed.

Efforts are underway to arrest the other suspects at large
