A Police Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah, stationed at Abuakwa, has been arrested for allegedly robbing more than eight mobile money vendors.
According to one victim, Victoria Arkoh, Inspector Bright robbed her of GH₵38,600 on the afternoon of 4th May while she was working at her shop at Santasi-Adiembra, Kumasi.
Narrating the incident to Crime Check, Mrs. Arkoh said the officer came to her shop pretending to make a transaction. She said he asked for her number so someone could send him money. She said she refused and told him to have the sender authorize a cash-out instead.
“He came on a motorbike and stood behind my shop where the entrance is. I asked him to stand in front of the counter so the CCTV could capture him. As I went inside to sit at the counter, he went to the back door, pointed a gun at me, and demanded all my money. I urinated on myself, and it drained onto my one-year-old baby,” she said.
The victim said the officer fled with GH₵38,600 in cash, her ATM card, Ghana card, wedding ring, and mobile phones. She recounted that she called for help, but people were afraid to chase him because he had a gun and was on a motorbike.
The next day, when she went to the Sokoban Police Station to report the case, she was told that another victim had already reported being robbed by Inspector Bright. In that incident, he had left his phone behind, forgetting it on the victim's counter.
“When he went to rob one of the MoMo vendors, the victim told him to enter the shop to collect the money. While they were going inside, the victim ran off. The officer left his gun and phone on the counter. After taking the money, he grabbed his gun but forgot his phone. The phone led to his arrest,” she said.
Police checked the phone and found details confirming he was an officer.
Mrs. Arkoh said when the victim went to the Adiebeba Police Station to report the robbery, Inspector Bright had already reported that his phone was stolen and asked the police to track it.
She said eight other victims had also lodged complaints against him. The case, she indicated was transferred to the Central Police Station, where an identification parade was held.
According to Arkoh, police arrested four accomplices—two officers and two civilians. All have been remanded into custody.
