A Level 400 Petroleum Engineering student at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani has died from suspected poisoning, the university has confirmed.

The deceased, identified as Godfred Akomaning, reportedly passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

In a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Head of the University Relations Office, Alfred Ohenenana Appiah, management said a medical report from the hospital identified the cause of death as organophosphate poisoning.

The university said the student’s family has been informed, and the body has been deposited at the Sefwi Anwiaso Community Hospital mortuary.

“Management of UENR expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family and the university community,” the statement noted.

It added that investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, with assurances that further details will be made public once confirmed.

UENR also reiterated its commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of students and staff.
