The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with a deadly armed robbery targeting a mobile money vendor at Fiapre-Zongo, a suburb of Sunyani, in Ghana’s Bono Region.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of Thursday, August 5, 2026, left two people dead and three others injured, heightening public concern over violent crime in the area.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, police received a distress call at approximately 8:00 p.m. reporting an ongoing robbery attack at Fiapre.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, but the assailants had fled before their arrival, the statement added.
The attack targeted a mobile money vendor, 30-year-old Amina Abu, who was reportedly robbed of GH₵30,000 in cash.
Four individuals, Amina Abu, Khadija Abu (23), Anifa Tanko (24), and Ibrahim Osei (40), were struck by pellets from gunshots fired during the attack.
The statement said police later discovered an unidentified man lying behind Ibrahim Osei’s residence with severe injuries. A black mask was found beside him, raising suspicions about his possible involvement in the crime.
All five victims were rushed to the Sunyani Regional Teaching Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Tragically, Ibrahim Osei was pronounced dead on arrival, while the unidentified man also died while receiving treatment.
Forensic Evidence and Police Investigation
Crime scene investigators retrieved six spent BB cartridge casings, which have been secured as exhibits for forensic analysis.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects disembarked from a cattle truck traveling towards the Berekum direction before carrying out the attack.
Following intelligence gathered, police alerted the Twumasikrom checkpoint to intercept vehicles transporting cattle along that route. This operation led to the arrest of nine suspects, who are currently assisting with investigations.
Police said the suspects would be processed and put before court in due course.
Bodies Preserved as Investigations Continue
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
Meanwhile, the police command has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down additional suspects believed to be at large.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring that all persons involved in this heinous crime are arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law,” the statement emphasized.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of mobile money operators, who have increasingly become targets of armed robbery attacks across the country.
